CAMC School of Nurse Anesthesia
HISTORY

The School's history dates back prior to the creation of the Charleston Area Medical Center. The hospitals that now comprise CAMC were originally independent hospitals. Memorial and General Hospitals each had their own nurse anesthesia program. Memorial's school opened in 1955, and General's in 1969. When the two hospitals merged in 1972, the CAMC School of Nurse Anesthesia was formed.

Since 1992, Marshall University Graduate College and CAMC have been engaged in an educational partnership for educating nurse anesthetists. The partnership is a unique higher education model graduate professional program of collaboration between a public teaching hospital and a public research university. Graduates of CAMC (including the class of 2008) receive(d) a Master of Science degree in Health Care Administration.

With advancing professional accreditation requirements, future CRNAs need to become doctoral qualified. In response to this trend, CAMC and Marshall expanded their collaborative vision to create the Doctor of Management Practice in Nurse Anesthesia (DMPNA). The DMPNA is a unique practice doctorate that combines advanced professional nurse anesthesia practice with entrepreneurial business management training. In May 2008 the School received full accreditation from the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA) for the first entry level nurse anesthesia doctorate program in the nation.
